Helpful Tips for a Successful and Rewarding Move

No matter which way you look at it, moving can be an extremely overwhelming task. But, if you start early, get organized early and stay organized through to the end , you’ll come through it with flying colours! Follow these simple, time-proven strategies and helpful tips for a successful and rewarding move.

Get An Early Start

Starting early in the moving process gives you the freedom and the flexibility to take your time, pace yourself along the way, and above all else, to avoid that panicked crunch the week before or the day before your scheduled move.

Get Organized Early And Stay Organized As You Go

Getting organized from the very beginning, and staying organized throughout the process, is the key to a successful move. There’s a lot to think about and a multitude of tasks to complete. Not only are you packing up and moving your current home, but you’re also working toward getting your new home up to speed and functioning at an optimal level for your move-in day, making it a happy home!

Avoid Forgetting Something or Leaving Anything To The Last Minute

Make a list of all the tasks that need to be accomplished prior to your move, both at your current home and at your new destination. Next, commit to a time frame to have everything completed. And, most importantly, once your plan is in place, stick to it!

Create A “Week By Week Countdown Calendar” to Moving Day

Remember that all tasks are not created equal, and each one has a different priority and deadline attached to it, to keep your moving process running smoothly. Creating a week by week countdown calendar allows you to organize and prioritize your tasks. It also gives you the peace of mind of knowing that, at the end of each week, you are on track and on schedule to meet your moving day deadline.

Four Weeks Prior To Moving:

  • Get boxes and all moving supplies – packing tape and dispenser, box labels, black markers and packing materials, like newspapers, bubble wrap etc.
  • Start packing on a room by room basis starting with the rooms that least impact your everyday life – basement, attic, and spare bedrooms etc. Continue moving systematically from room to room each week, leaving the most critically used rooms to the end.
  • Label all boxes with the room it is destined for in your new location and the contents of each box. Label the sides of each box so you can easily find them in a stack.
  • Schedule mail forwarding to your new address with Canada Post.
  • Arrange connection of utilities, phone, cable and internet services at your new home.
  • Arrange disconnection of utilities, phone, cable and internet services at your old address and the return of cable TV equipment.

Three Weeks Prior To Moving:

  • Ensure that insurance, government, club memberships, doctors, dentists, schools, banks, credit card companies, tax offices and Health Cards are notified of the timing of your move and change of address.
  • Arrange transfer of home insurance and car insurance to your new location.
  • Register your children in their new schools and notify current schools to transfer school records.
  • Get copies of medical, dental and veterinary records.
  • Dispose of unwanted items.
  • Take hazardous household chemicals to your local Toxic Waste Centre.

Seven Days Prior To Moving:

  • Prepare a box of all your important paperwork: moving itinerary, maps, insurance, medical records, auto policy, passports and other valuables to personally transport to your new home.
  • Pack a suitcase with the clothes and toiletries that you’ll need the first few days in your new home.
  • Pack a special box with essentials you’ll need on arrival at your new home. Suggested items would include a box cutter, paper towels, toilet paper, trash bags, cleaning supplies, a flashlight, light bulbs, power strips, phone chargers, tools and coffee maker to assist you in getting settled into your new home.

The Day Before Moving:

  • Empty and defrost refrigerators and freezers and clean kitchen appliances.
  • Do a final walkthrough of your property to ensure that packing is complete and all possessions are ready to move to your new home.

Moving Day:

  • Collect all keys; keep them in a safe place.
  • If using a moving company, walk about with the supervisor and sign inventory forms.
  • Confirm your new address and delivery time with the driver.
  • Have cash and credit cards on hand.

Arriving At Your New Home:

  • Ensure that all of your household belongings have arrived safely.
  • Place a floor plan of your new home near the entrance to aid movers in navigating the new space, ensuring that all boxes will be placed in their labeled rooms.
  • Contact city and municipal offices to learn about garbage pickup, recycling facilities and local regulations and information.
  • Get to know your new neighbourhood.
  • Check out emergency services in your new area.
  • Change your driver’s license and license plates, if required.
  • Relax and enjoy!
